Week 4 - Research
As I have been sick for almost a week and a half and not being able to attend to lectures I have been concentrating on the research of what I could do for my show reel.
There are the videos that I have watched so far to get some ideas. (Youtube)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaNQdDjmbL4
This one has variety of style, not only the own style, it has Disney, looney tunes etc. I like how this person is showing how he/she can animate in a lot of different styles, not only sticking with one style.
Very colourful and fun to watch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr-V5p7gc_Q
The thing I liked about this one is that this person has the own original style, all in 2D black and white, more like Japanese cartoon style. But I think it would be better if this person could show more varieties of what he/she can do.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sV5LNB-rXHo
This one has a lot of short simple animations, I like how most of the animations are simple walk cycle or facial movements, simple movements such as animal's tail is moving etc.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhCIkPfIHyM
This video is not a show reel, it's been created from the animator/comedian Tekken. I love his style of drawing since the simple character design can express such a huge amount of emotions, the simple character design can probably express the emotions better than character with too much details.

Week 3 - A bit of experiment
An experiment of Sea angel swimming.
Sea angel has this unique ways of swimming, their fins (hands?) actually looks like an Angel's wing and when they swim they move their fins just like the wing.
This short GIF animation is an experiment to learn their movements.

Week 3 - Previous work
I know this is not 3D or 2D, but I thought I could re-make this animation in 2D or maybe create the 'after story' in 2D.

Week 2 - Romance
The other genre that I looked at was the Romance.
I guess romance would also become one of the emotional genre, but romance was also something that I have never touched before.
I think Romance is one of the most popular topic (or genre) in Japanese animation, when I watch Japanese animation most of the time the romance scene appears, often something very simple like a boy and a girl falls in love... etc.

Week 2 - more Ideas
Since I've concentrated on serious emotional story last week, this week I have decided to think of something different, The comedy.
This week I will be looking into the character design.
I wanted to think of an animal that is not so popular like dog or cat, something strange looking, but unique.
So the animals (fish?) that I have looked at is "Sea angels", also known as "Clione".
The first time I saw this weird living thing was when I visited to aquarium long long time ago, they are one of the tiniest living thing that I have ever seen, and probably one of the cutest animals that I have ever seen.
Sea angel has its unique way to swim around the sea, they do not look like fish, shell fish or any other sea life. They swim like an angel, their hands (fins?) moves like a wing so people say they are an angel of the sea, Sea butterfly or Sea goddess. Their body is translucent, often the aquarium puts UV light behind them so that their body glows as they are a real angel or goddess.
But recently I have discovered the most shocking facts about Sea angels, the way they eat or hunt food they become one of the most scariest thing ever. Almost like a devil...
So, I came up with this character.
Clio the Sea angel. I wanted to create some sort of simple but funny-looking character.
I will be looking into his movement next.

Week 1 - Ideas
As I have mentioned on the previous posts I was always interested with the serious emotional story line. I always enjoy listening or watching people's documentaries (non-fictional stories) since I find them interesting more than anything else. I do enjoy making up stories but I like making stories based on the true stories, for example, using my own or my families experience and change into animation style by simplifying the story line or exaggerating the certain parts.
Recently I have traveled back into my home country Japan and re-united with my families. As I was having a nice conversation with my Grandmother I suddenly asked her this, Can I hear your story? Since it was a sudden question so my Grandmother was rather confused, but after the few seconds of awkward silence, she was happily talked about her life.
I would classify my Grandmother as a strong, happy and optimistic person. Since I was young I have never seen her acting pessimistic, she was always full of happiness. Even after my Grandfather (my Grandmother's husband) 's death she did not lose her happy mind (well, at least at the front of people). I was always curious how she can be such a happy person, has she always been so happy, is there any reason to keep her so positive minded.
The stuff I heard from her was not something that I would have imagined, in fact, I was actually surprised how she can be so happy after all the things happened on her in her early life.
Firstly she has told me that she was adopted when she was 9 years old by her aunt. She did not tell me how hard or difficult it was, but I would believe it was one of the most hardest thing to do. I would say 9 years old is probably old enough to understand the situation, but maybe too young to be separated by their parents.
Then she went through WW2 and experienced the hard time with poverty, but after the war she met a man who will become a future husband (my Grandfather).
They fell in love and got married, everything looking good, my Grandmother then became pregnant.
When she gave birth to her first child everyone was happy and everyone wished her and her daughter a happy life. But all suddenly the child died from the illness. She was only a couple months old.
She then got pregnant again for her second child, keeping the hopes, but ended up losing her second child, a baby boy.
I could never imagine from her that she went through hard time losing her child, not just once, twice. What surprised me was that she still stayed strong and tried again, and gave birth to 3 more child who is my Aunties and my mother. She has told me that the reason she can stay positive is that even she has lost her first 2 babies she still managed to raise 3 more child and they all grew up healthy and happy.
"Better be happy than sad" is her ways to keep happy and strong. After hearing her stories I was so inspired with her sad, but strong stories and wanted to use this as an idea of my story boarding.
I have done a bit of sketching of this storyboard.

New term, new project introduction
2013 has started, and the second term has started.
This term's project is to write a proposal for my project and my future.
In terms of project we are producing a demo reel to show my current work and also the previous animation work. I will need to think about what sort of area that I am interested, or intended to carry on studying in the animation industry. My current interests would be 2D based animation, story boarding and the character design.
I will be concentrating on getting some ideas for the story boarding and the character design first. In terms of story boarding I always enjoy making up stories or actually using my own experience to create the story, the story genre is often emotional. I enjoy telling the story that would possibly affect into audience's thoughts, possibly change the way they think towards to the certain things or understanding the facts, non-fictonal stories and people's life.
My tutor's advice was to not just concentrate on the emotional serious stories, possibly look into other genre as well such as comedy, action, romance etc. So I will be looking into the genre that I have never touched before. I believe that this would be a good opportunity to introduce a new types of stories or character design to myself.
